The design I had in my head for Libra is actually the reason I wanted to create a zodiac collection in the first place. I’d just got it in my head that I wanted to draw the scales, but with the sun and moon.
As I started thinking about how the collection would be tied together, I knew I wanted it to be centred around femininity. So I thought, okay, I always think of the sun and moon as female bodies, but that still didn’t feel like enough. It felt like I needed a stronger central figure rather than just symbols, something that could carry the whole idea visually rather than just sitting inside it.
So then I decided instead of scales, I would have an iconic woman. I was also thinking about one of the photoshoots I’d seen on America's Next Top Model, which I know is a bit topical at the moment for all the wrong reasons, but there was one shoot where they get the model to pose as the Vitruvian Man.
And I just thought that would be really cool and actually work really well for this design.
That idea of balance through the body rather than through a scale felt like it fit Libra much more naturally. And then to bring it back to my feminine goddess theme she is wearing the famous Barbie swimsuit and wearing heart shaped sunglasses. (I did think about making her nude but decided it would probably be a point of friction for some people.)
The whole design is then placed inside the Libra glyph. I have the four lines here deliberately to represent the air element, and she also has a little tattoo of the air element symbol.
There are also seven stars included, as Libra is the seventh sign of the zodiac.
I really wanted her hair to have a purple-rinse, slightly pink tinge to it, which I think it does. I don’t know why, that’s just how my brain goes sometimes.
I faffed about for ages with the font - I did originally hand-draw it but it just wasn't perfect and in the end after trying many many fonts, I was super happy to find this one. Genuinly can't tell you how many times I changed it.
So hear's Libra - hope you like her!
