This one took a little while to come together.
The idea is a maiden holding her wheat like a sword. She’s based on She-Ra, which is another reference from my childhood (one of my first obsessions was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe). I don't remember their being any logical thought process to this, just one of those where I had to wait patiently and the ideas eventually appeared in dribs and drabs.
She also has a floating quality to her, with a touch of Princess Rosalina in there from Super Mario. My kids are really into Mario at the moment, so that’s been bringing back all the nostalgia from my SNES and Game Boy days.
There’s definitely something about revisiting those early visual worlds as an adult that starts to influence how you build new ones without even realising it!
I really struggled bringing her face to life, and ended up taking inspiration from my total girl crush Anya Taylor-Joy... who is also in the Mario universe now as well. Love it when all the synchronicity comes together!
I wanted everything else in the design to be really symmetrical, because I just kind of feel that’s the vibe of Virgo, structured, balanced, and precise. The rule of straightness!
I also wanted it to have a bit of a 70s flower power vibe, although I feel like that’s maybe lost a little in the final version.
The palette is earthy and very Virgo, but also with a subtle retro feel.
The earth element is in the outer bow of the rainbow, but also represented as the zigzag lines between the rainbow. And the top line doubles as the belt in her dress. She also has a bunch of wheat forming both her sword and her crown. And the Virgo constellation is layered over the top of the design. The Virgo glyph clearly stamped in the top left hand corner. I really love how this design fills the whole print space.
This one ended up feeling quite calm compared to some of the others, which actually suits the energy I was trying to capture for my Virgo Maiden Goddess.
